PRADHAN MANTRI GRAM SADAK YOJANA(PMGSY)

PRADHAN MANTRI GRAM SADAK YOJANA(PMGSY)Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana popularly known as ‘PMGSY’ is a scheme that was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the 25th of December 2000, to bridge the gap between the “Urban India & the Rural Bharat”. The Pradhan Mantri Garm Sadak Yojana is a centrally funded scheme with the Ministry of Rural Development as the Nodal Agency. It seeks to support the states in achieving road connectivity through construction of good quality all weather roads to the rural population.

Road connectivity is one of the important factors in physical development of the villages. The Primary objective of the PMGSY is to provide connectivity by way of All-weather Road (with necessary culverts and cross-drainage structures, which are motorable throughout the year), to the unconnected habitations in the rural areas.

Besides providing connectivity to the Habitations, the PMGSY also aims to upgrade, the existing rural roads to desired specifications.

The PMGSY envisages minimal network of road i.e. network of the road that is essential to provide basic access to essential social economic services to all eligible habitations in the selected area through at least a single all weather road connectivity.

ROAD SPECIFICATIONS UNDER PMGSY

The Rural roads constructed under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana must meet the Technical specifications laid down by the Indian Road Congress (IRC) & is given in the Rural Road Manual (IRC:SP20:2002).
The primary focus of PMGSY is to provide All-Weather road connectivity to unconnected habitations. All-Weather road is one which is negotiable during all weathers. This implies that the road-bed is drained effectively by cross-drainage structures such as culverts, minor bridges and causeways, along with the cross drainage structures, side gutters & complete road furniture that includes sign-boards, milestones etc.
The PMGSY specifies that the length of the road has to be more than 500 m & allows for carriageway of 3.0 m where the traffic intensity is less than 100 motorized vehicles per day & where the traffic is not likely to increase due to situation like dead end, low Habitation and difficult terrain condition. To ensure economy in respect of link roads, the carriageway width may be restricted to 3.0m in all such cases with the corresponding road way width etc.as per the Rural Roads Manual.
